Abuso abusador y perdon

Hermanos no debemos ver pornografía.

DI Programs to help LDS Mormon Bishops and members

New Job training opportunities for members and tools for Bishops

Leaders and Families

Leaders and Families

75th anniversary for Deseret Industries Tour

The Bishops and Branch Presidents were invited to tour the 700 South DI just east of State Street yesterday so we could get an idea of what services they offer and here are some highlights that I was impressed with.

Educational opportunities for those the Bishop refers in order to help members find a job or improve their current situation. There are programs in conjunction with working at DI and other programs available where the member can attend training at night, during the day or online where they continue working at their normal job.

There are over 200 specific training programs and some of those that are available are:

GED Preparation and or help to get high school diploma
English as a second language beginning through advanced up to 300 hours of instruction.
Welder certificate, CDL Truck driver training, Machinist, Diesel Maintenance Technician
Air Conditioning/Heating/Refrigeration HVAC
CNA Certified Nursing Assistant , Lab Assistant, Phlebotomy Tech, Medical Coding
Web site Designer, Network Administrator, Computer Support

They can work at DI 28 hours a week at minimum wage and be involved in one of the above training programs.

They must be legally here in the US and they cannot have been convicted of a violent crime, drug distribution or any sexual crime. This helps keep DI a safe environment for the workers and the customers. If it has been over 5 years and the Bishop recommends the person the application can be petitioned through the Presiding Bishop’s Office for a waiver under special circumstances although there is no guarantee they will be accepted. If they are working on a Word of Wisdom issue or drugs DI will work closely with the Bishop to help these people progress in the program.

LDSjobs.org is a very helpful website for members and Bishops. Bishops and members can use their LDS.org login and password to sign into this web site. Bishops will have additional tools to view information for the members.

DICM.org or Deseret Industries Case Management System is the website where Bishops can monitor the progress of members in the DI program. Those people that are not members of the Church can participate in the program with a recommendation from the Bishop and he would determine what is required of them in order to do so.

City Bus Passes are available to those in the DI program at a discounted rate of approximately 60% off the normal price.

WOWI – World of Work Inventory – This is a new program where you can take a test at DI that is just over an hour that will determine your strong areas so you can know what fields may be best for you to study or work in. This test takes just over an hour and will help you with your goals to start or better your job possibilities.

LearnKey.com is an online training program for real world skills that Bishops may take advantage of that works as follows:
The member would sign up for LearnKey and the Bishop or other person he assigns can follow the progress of the program as an administrator and sign additional people up as needed. LearnKey offers many classes online that will help anyone develop computer skills such as XL, Word, IT, Web Design and other programs and there are classes on anger management, leadership training, supervisor training and the list goes on. Some of the classes are available in Spanish as well. There is no cost for this program to those referred by the Bishop. The Church pays for this every year and it is not being used as much as it could be. Bishops can contact DI and get their own administrator sign in ID.

LearnKey can be used as a return and report tool for Bishops because he could assign a member to complete the course “Combating Self Negativity” or “Establishing and Maintaining Good Credit” or “Workplace Etiquette” or “Reducing and Managing Stress” and the Bishop can log in to see the progress of the member and see how much time they have spent etc…

The LearnKey program is available to anyone the Bishop refers including people with or without documents.

LDS Employment Center works in conjunction with DI to help people learn interview skills, build a resume the right way and get a job, a better job or a raise.

Start your own business

The Church Service Missionaries are involved in a special program to help people set up their own businesses. This is one of the only ways an undocumented person can legally work here in the US. There is a training class that is offered every few months and this can also be a great resource to Bishops and Wards. If you have a business idea they can help determine if it is a viable idea. Training for this is also available in Spanish.

ZeroWater filter and cost savings

Tap water verses Filtered water verses bottled water

(Which should also may or may not be filtered)
Is filtered water better for you if it takes all the mineral out?

Is filtered water better for you if it takes all the mineral out?

Yesterday I purchased a ZeroWater 23 cup filter and it came with a TDS Meter to test “Total Dissolved Solids” in the water. I tested our tap water and it was 256ppm or parts per million and I also tested our bottled water from Nestle (Pure Life) and it tested out at 55ppm although that may have something to do with minerals that have been added back into the water after filtering. I then tested the water out of the new filter and it tested out at 0ppm and it says once the meter says the water is 6ppm you should change the filter. I also did a taste test with the ZeroWater filter and the bottled water and tap water. The ZeroWater filter is the best tasting water in my opinion as well.

My boss says he actually likes the taste with the minerals in the water. I do not like drinking the water out of the tap at my work (Murray) and while I worked in the lab at OC Tanner we tested the company water drinking fountains for metals and surprisingly we found high metal content in many of the drinking fountains especially those that were not used as often as the others were.

The cost of the 23 cup container with one filter was $39.99 at Smith’s Market Place and you can get it for the same cost at Target.

Extra filters cost from $10 each if you buy in bulk up to $16 dollars each if you buy one at a time.

Apparently you can filter about 16 gallons of water so after the initial investment you are spending about 63 cents to a dollar to filter a gallon of water which is much less than bottled water although my wife got a deal on 3 gallons of the Nestle Pure Life in 16.9 oz bottles for $1 per gallon (12.5 cents a bottle) at NPS National Product Sales but you have to haul that back and forth from the store and the bottled water once again was 55ppm dissolved solids which could be salt, metals, minerals etc…Normally water costs 1 or 2 dollars a bottle which comes out to about 8 dollars a gallon and more if you are at the fair and pay $3 a bottle.

The ZeroWater has a 5 layer filter so we will be using this for a while but for now I am very satisfied with the product since my wife does not like drinking tap water and our water in the fridge stopped working because the tube I believe froze because the kids have messed the freezer settings. The last time it happened we took everything out of the freezer for one day and the water started working again after the tube thawed out.

Some other questions and concerns are: Yes this filter takes everything out so you have Zero on the TDS reading but does it take out things that we need like minerals? I suppose if we are eating right we can get most of our minerals through food. I would be interested in your thoughts about filtering and water.

Credit issues payment arrangements and avoiding being sent to collections

Advice for loans, credit, credit cards and accounts going into collections

Don't be caught unprepared

Don’t be caught unprepared

This advice will be especially helpful to young people so pay attention.

Accounts sent to collections will not only hurt your credit score but can cause many more problems.

Missing payments or paying loans late hurts your credit score and makes it hard to get a loan later on and when you do you end up paying more money in the long run than someone with a good credit history.
When you ignore someone that you owe money to many times they will send your account to collections, court or a lawyer.
Not contacting a company that you owe money to in order to make arrangements to pay less or late may force them to send the account to collections so a small bill can turn into a much larger bill with lawyer fees, late fees etc… Advice: Always send those you owe something even if it is not the full payment to avoid them sending the account to collections. Always call and talk to them and most of the time they will work with you. When you ignore them they resort to a lawyer and that costs everyone money.

Many times companies will take about half of what you owe as payment in full. If you talk to them and ask many times they will lower what you owe. Example: If you owe a hospital 2000 many times if you pay cash they will reduce it to about 1300 and they will close the account as paid. Make sure they are not marking the account as a CHARGE OFF because that reflects negatively on your credit score.

If you can’t pay a large amount then call and tell them what you can afford to send each month and always ask if you can apply for financial assistance for medical bills that way you may get help with the rest of the bill.
If you are sending a company $50 a month instead of the $100 a month that you are supposed to pay normally they will work with you. You can also ask that they reduce the interest rate and payments for a hardship. Tell them if you just lost your job and let them know as soon as you get another job you will start sending them more money per month but always send them something each month.

If a judge reviews your case and you can show a solid payment history he or she is much more likely to rule in your favor if you can show you tried your best and you were not ignoring the debt.
This can still affect your credit score although it is much better than having a 600 dollar loan turn into a 3,000 or 4,000 dollar loan.

Be careful about credit consolidation companies that tell you they can reduce all your payments to one low monthly payment because sometimes they don’t follow through and your credit score gets affected and they don’t pay the loans as they tell they will be doing and it still goes to collection and often to court. Get references for companies like this. There are free programs that you can get help from that help you do this same thing and you can get references from the Government by calling 211.

When you have never bought anything on credit, never have taken out a loan you don’t have a credit history so many times banks, credit unions or other lending institutions are willing to give you a loan. Credit unions are normally a better choice when getting a small loan for a car because the interest rate will be much lower than other places.
Your first loan can either help your credit or hurt it. If you make your payments on time and never miss this will get reported to the Credit agencies and this will increase your credit score. If you don’t make all your payments or you don’t make the payments on time then this can lower or hurt your credit score. Then when you need another loan many times they will say no or you will end up paying a very high interest rate.

When I bought my first new car I paid 354 per month for 5 years which is 60 payments or $21,240 dollars and the cost of the car was $17,000 dollars so I ended up paying $4,240 Dollars in interest over the life of the loan which turns out to be almost 25% of the original amount even though they tell you the interest is like 7 percent or less it ends up costing you money to borrow money.

My cousin Brent came to Utah one day and I went with him to buy a car and he told them which car he wanted and then offered them CASH and got a much better deal than the sticker price because they would get their money right then he ended up saving money by not paying interest so he paid much less than I did for the same thing. The problem is many of us don’t have lots of cash lying around and many times we don’t want to save up but we want whatever we want right now.

Another good example is a house loan. I will use a rate from my neighborhood to give you real figures. A house loan that is $155,000, 5% and 30 years with $5000 dollars as a down payment takes the loan amount down to $150,000 and the payments are about $1,000 per month for 30 years so for a $155,000 dollar house you end up paying 360 payments or $360,000 dollars which is over double the loan so even with a 5% interest rate you end up paying 230% if you don’t have CASH. If you make extra payments you can pay the Principle down faster and pay off the loan in 15 years but most people don’t have extra money to do that.
Some PAYDAY loans end up charging over 400% interest even though they tell you 21% because with penalties for paying late a 600 dollar loan can turn into a $3000 dollar debt very quickly if you don’t make extra payments.

Credit cards are similar. They are good to have and necessary when renting a car or going on a trip but the best way to use credit cards is to charge the trip or the car rental and then pay the entire thing off before 30 days that way you can avoid the 21% interest. If you just make minimum payments you will never pay the card off. If you miss payments or pay late that can also affect your credit score negatively.

You don’t have to be good at MATH to understand interest rates. Sometimes it is figured on the whole amount, other times it added up daily on the unpaid balance and figured monthly or using a special calculation. The bottom line is that you end up paying someone to borrow money so in order to avoid interest save up and pay or pay your credit card off each month. These companies and people are making money while they sleep and you may loose sleep because you’re so stressed about how much you owe.

Always stay in communication with the people and companies you owe and life will be much better. Otherwise you will get to hate having them call you all the time hounding you for a payment.

Never lie to them. If you can’t send them $100 tell them so but be honest and tell them how much you can send. If you won’t make a payment don’t lie to them tell them when they can expect the next payment.
