Security companies in Utah are not equal

Not all companies are alike

You’ve heard that we should compare apples to apples rather than apples and oranges.

Company One – UL listed monitoring station – backup generators – extra personnel on duty – secure facility – backup equipment in case of failure
Company two operating with one piece of equipment and no backup and one person in the facility. They they have a heart attack signals are not sent on to authorities.

Many other companies – OVER 1000 COMPLAINTS two of our competitors have over 3000 complaints (ASK WHY) – Sure you will find complaints on the internet for any company although looking at the is important because they investigate both sides of the issues so a customer that knows they did not pay their bill and should have normally won’t file a complaint but will complain online.

Company one – Advertises with actual commercials and word of mouth advertising.
Many other companies pay to be on a top ten alarm company list so when the internet pulls up results also check the Better Business Bureau not just a top internet list that is paid for.

Company one in business since 1969 not using gimmicks of offering free equipment
Many other companies giving free equipment out like candy – Often they go out of business in a few years.

Company one puts together custom systems to meet your needs
Other companies don’t address individual needs as well because they are cookie cutter companies

Company one has actual people that you can talk with and personal service
Many other companies are very difficult to talk to after you have purchased the system and need anything else.

I served the people of the State of Utah by service on the Alarm System Security and Licensing board for over 7 years. I was appointed by the Acting Governor Olene Walker. As chairman of this board I was also a member of the Construction trade commission which is a policy making board.

While serving on these boards I met many wonderful people such as Scott Sessions with Mountain Alarm, Will Naegle with Alarm control and Jeff Howe with Peak Alarm all of whom are honest and well known businessmen in our community. I can’t make a full list of all the people I dealt with but this is a short list of great companies that are all local companies.

Mountain Alarm is the largest of the three and within the family they also own a UL listed Central Station (Also known as Fire Protection Services – Central Station is Avantguard)

Alarm Control does incredible work and most of their work is commercial and they can solve hard to handle intrusion issues. (Also known as Armed Alert)

Peak Alarm is unique in the fact that they have an Alarm division, Guard and Patrol Division, AV Division and a UL listed Central Station Scott Sessions Will Naegle Jeff Howe

Having worked with these individuals for years you get to know them well, how they speak, how they act and most importantly what kind of people they are. With the state of Utah being full of alarm companies that send people out to other states to knock doors and most of those businesses are just looking for the quick residential systems that can be put in in a couple of hours or less. The list of the above three companies have great records with the Better Business Bureau unlike some of the other competitors that have several thousand complaints.

Take care when getting proposals from alarm companies to do your research first and remember you do get what you pay for and there is no free lunch. Some of these companies claim to provide free equipment or labor but don’t be deceived. If you sign a 36 month agreement with Peak ALarm for $45 dollars a month (A typical monitoring rate for interactive cellular) you would pay $1,620.00 over 36 months.

If you sign a 60 month agreement with another company at $45 per month you would pay $2,700 over 60 months or 5 years and they say it is free equipment but you are really paying for it and if you decide to change monitoring they will take you to court and force you to pay what they call BOC or Balance of Contract in order to get out of the contract.

The kicker is that these companies often will charge you $70 per month for 5 years or $4,200 which is over double what Peak charges. Granted each system is different and there are many factors such as whether the system is encrypted making is much less likely to hack and how many devices are on the system and the services that you have each month.

Example of some of the services:

Typical Monitoring $35 per month (This can vary when you bundle other services)
Alarm Response where we sent a uniformed guard in a marked car to your home or business $10 per month (Only in specific areas)
Key Response where you have a keybox on your property so in the event of an alarm we would send a guard out to check the inside of the property $20 per month
Schedules, text or email notification, openings and closings (alert you if your store is opened too early or not armed on time or disarmed on time) Some other services
Cellular Monitoring $15 per month (Includes interactive arm and disarming)
Home automation services such as locks, lighting control, thermostat control, garage door control also are other such services that can be bundled
Commercial Fire monitoring is normally $35 for landline or $48 for high supervision cellular or radio

Years after I began on the Alarm System Security and Licensing Board for DOPL one of the companies that has lots of complaints with the BBB started sending a lawyer to each of our meetings to observe. I understand why they would do this. This company happens to be very large and has a great deal of accounts. This company had been accused of deceptive business practices and had been sued in several states and even recently was ordered to pay 10 million dollars to another alarm company. We were even told by the company owners that since they had thousands of salespeople it was very hard for them to control the actions of so many people. At Peak Alarm for example when a salesperson does something they should not do they are reprimanted and receive a written warning and if it happens again they can be let go. If any of the sales people do not qualify or pass the FBI background check they are let go and I know this is the same at Mountain as well as Alarm Control. One large company that had an employee not pass the back ground check simply transferred him to another state where the licensing laws will allow a person with a felony to sell or install security systems.

So there are honest alarm companies out there that you can use, you can get bids from them and worry less since you have done your research on the people the company and their business practices. All companies will have complaints on the internet. Looking at the complaints is a bit better since they know both sides will be investigated. Many people hesitate to file a complaint with the bbb if they know they were in the wrong and if it is investigated the truth will come out. Two of the above listed companies have zero complaints on the BBB and one of them only has 5 compared to over 4000 with another Utah based company.

Senior Citizen monitoring discount Peak Alarm

Marilyn Sheppick

Peak Alarm will lock in Senior Citizens at a fixed monitoring rate. Senior Citizens often are on a fixed income and having a monitoring company increase their rates every years on their security system monitoring does not help.

Call Larry Love (801) 428 1384 Peak Alarm

My mother remarried and I found out she was paying 72 dollars a month through one of the largest national security monitoring companies and the rates had increased over the years. The 72 dollars a month was only for monthly monitoring and did not include other services it was through the phone line. I called that company to make the change since they were out of contract and it was very difficult to get them to cancel the agreement even though they were not under contract any longer. I lowered her rate and added a medical button which she did end up pushing when she fell in the bathroom. Peak Alarm’s monitoring rates start at $26 dollars a month and depending on what services you decide on such as another $10 for cellular or another $5 for interactive remote arm and disarm the rates can be a bit higher but once a senior is locked in they keep that rate. Jerry Howe the owner made this decision and we have been in business for over 48 years.

Security System Advice

Employees over 300 local people

1. Make sure your security system cannot be defeated by someone cutting the phoneline outside the house or business. You can switch to a cellular or radio communicator to make this more secure.

1A. Make sure that you use an encrypted system such as DMP or Qolsys so hackers cannot defeat your system from out front of your home.

2. Make sure you clean your smoke detectors every 6 months or year so they will last longer

3. Make sure you test your system often to make sure nothing has been tampered with. Often someone within your organization will attempt to disable doors or other items.

4. Update your call list with current phone numbers and names and new passwords.

Utah Alarm Pricing

When a product is quite a bit less expensive you need to question why.

Contact Larry Love at Peak Alarm for all your alarm, access, fire alarm, intrusion, cameras and intercom needs. (801) 428 1384

We can lower your installation cost when you sign a 3 year agreement because we can subsidize some of the cost over time. We can do contracts that are less time but we would not be able to lower the install as much. We can even do month to month agreements but the upfront cost would be more.

Any time you have a licensed, insurred and certified company you will end up paying a bit more for their services although this is worth it.

Labor rates at Peak are $100 per hour for residential and $145 per hour for commerical. When I am in a bidding situation I can lower the hourly labor rate a bit when we run it through my department.

Check the Better Business Bureau on all of your alarm companies. Peak has a very good track record at the BBB. In the last 3 years we only have one complaint that is shown on our record. Many of our competitors have a great deal more complaints.

If you are concerned about hackers disarming your system from out front of your home have Peak install a Qolsys system or a DMP system both of which are encrypted

On the UL site go to online certifications directory at the bottom to find the companies in an area or state that hold certifications. All of this information is public record on the site. When you find any errors on this blog please inform and he will correct those errors after verification of the correct information.

*Mountain Alarm/FPS sold Avantguard a while back although they still use Avantguard as their Central Station and apparently there is still a relationship between the companies as far as ownership goes. Mountain Alarm is the security side of the business and FPS is Fire Protection Services which does fire alarm etc…

There are about 200 Central Stations in the US that are both UL and 5 Diamond Certified and Peak ALarm is one of those. The CSAA 5 Diamond certification indicates that all of our Central Station dispatchers/employees are highly trained to react calmly and appropriately to high stress situations.

From the information that we have about the UL listed Central Stations in this document the LDS Church does not monitor accounts as a business nor does L3 Communications West or Boeing so those Central Stations hold the proper listings in order to meet the criteria and provide services within their realm so you can’t call them up and have them monitor your security or fire alarm accounts. UL listed Central Stations out of State can be used although some Fire Marshals request that a local Central Station be used in certain cases. Often insurance companies and other requirements are in play so they want a local central station to do the monitoring and provide the installation and service when needed.

Peak Alarm is the only company that currently holds all 5 of the above UL Certifications in Utah

Peak Alarm also has a full Guard and Patrol division as well as armed or unarmed guards. Peak Alarm has been in business since 1969.

Call Larry Love (801) 428 1384 or email him at for more information on this blog or for pricing for monitoring, Security, Fire Alarm, UL2050 installations, access control or camera systems.

Peak Alarm has stepped up their advertising so you will see TV commercials, Radio spots and even electronic billboard ads for Peak Alarm. The new look of our website is very professional and after more than 47 years in business Peak Alarm is not only growing but improving as well.

Peak take complaints seriously and I met with the owner and the CEO of the company and they review these comments and use them as a way to improve what we are currently doing. Peak employees over 300 people locally and yet we are still a small company in many ways because you can still call our company (801) 486 7231 and get a live person quite quickly. We pride ourselves by striving to take care of our customers.

Peak Alarm has only had 1 complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau in the last 3 years. Many of our competitors have hundreds and there are a couple of our competitors that have more than 3000 complaints. So be sure to check the before buying any security system.

Peak Alarm also does not do Credit Checks. Peak does not give away free equipment either and that is why we have been in business so long. You may get a song and a dance from other companies claiming to give you something FREE but the truth is that equipment is not free, you will either pay more per month or you will pay for a longer period of time. So if the install is free compare against a normal Peak Alarm plan and you will see that we measure up in many ways that others don’t. Often other companies will run a credit check, they will also charge you more than $50 per month for normal monitoring services when Peak can give you additional services that other companies can for the same or for less money per month.

Beware of Monitoring companies that have very low cost plans per month because often they are computerized, or they are out of state or out of the country and the person calling you does not know anything about Salt Lake, Utah or Idaho when Peak Employees do. Peak Alarm is the only full service alarm company that has a full service Guard/Patrol company as well so when the Police do not respond, we do. Peak can normally get to your home in the Salt Lake area within 15 minutes and if the Police do respond in your area many times they will get there in 30 or even take over an hour.

Negative experiences from customers about one of the DO IT YOURSELF ALARM COMPANIES.

I chose this company because of their online information _______________________________ however I found out that is totally a sham. I am visually disabled and required my friends help to install the system it turned out to be way more difficult than suggested on their website and they do not provide support whatsoever. The problem was the alarm before it was even configured kept setting itself off with a piercing siren and the only way to turn it off with cutting the wires and they still would not help me. Do not purchase the system under any circumstances if you are not technically inclined

_________________________is not a good business and does not really care about its customers and here are three concrete examples that can illustrate the issue. 1. You can upgrade the service online anytime! Really easy to pay more to use an app that should be included in basic service. But to Downgrade they force you to call in to dissuade you with wait times and just pure inconvenience. Not focused on the customer clearly just the bottom line. 2. When you call to downgrade. They do not credit you any part of the month that you did not get access to the upgraded service. So you have to call on the day it renews or they will profit for “enhanced services” they did not provide. May be a good class action suit because I am not sure that is legal.. If they provide the upgraded services for 1 out of 30 days you call to downgrade but they keep the money for the full month? That should not be legal and it is certainly not customer focused. __________________________could build customer loyalty and a better brand by simply changing these practices but they rely on the fact that you have invested in the product and now are stuck.

I was a customer of _____________________________, and i received a motion sensor that kept notifying an alarm. I moved the sensor around to different locations and it was always the same sensor that kept giving false alarms. This happened 4 times and i received an outstanding bill for $450.I received a new sensor and the false alarm stopped; this let me know it was a faulty sensor. I tried calling the company to see if we can come to an agreement, and they told me that they could not help in any way. They didn’t offer a solution or even attempt to keep me as a customer. I wonder how a company that doesn’t stand behind their products is still ____ accredited. All i wanted was home security and instead i have an outstanding amount due of $450. needless to say i would not recommend _____________________ to anyone.

This is nothing big but first impressions are important. They had already charged for the system and monthly payment. Gave us a tracking number that cant be tracked, looks like they haven’t ship it out yet. No one responds to our email and it has been a week since we place an order. We are extremely disappointed and will consider keeping the system or not after receiving it.

I just contacted Tech Support because the ******* ***** ****** stopped working a couple of days ago. The technician I spoke with was less than interested in my problem and said there was nothing he could do and I would have to reset the system and see if that corrected the problem. I have ________________________ and am paying so that when I’m away from home I will know that my home is protected. However I now find out that when I’m away from home and have a problem with the system, _______________________ can be done nothing to correct a problem. Unbelievable and I think the technician I spoke with is better suited to work where there is no customer contact.

Have had ___________________________ service for 4 months and 2 failures with the system requiring me to manually reset the system. I am out of town and cannot physically reset the system, so what good is it ?

I have been a paying customer with this alarm company only to find out that I have been paying for a service that was NOT in place from their company!!! They are NOT registered with the police department. Therefore, if my burglar alarm is triggered, they WILL NOT dispatch the police due to a mistake on their part. Even worse, my home alarm was triggered and I received a call from ________________ who then notified me that the police will not come to my home due to ____________________________ not having a contract in Colorado Springs! What the hell am I paying for? to hear that my property is being robbed and they are not dispatching police?? I feel like I have ripped off!!!

These are only some of the examples of the complaints against this company.

Peak Alarm is Licensed, is insured and has trained technicians that can install your system professionally and our central station is UL listed and 5 diamond certified. I cannot guarantee that you won’t have any problems although as a local company that has been in business for over 47 years Peak Alarm strives to provide a great service for a fair price. Peak is considering offering do it yourself kits and we will research the information and look for the best system if we decide to go in that direction. As a local company we provide a professional service that out of state companies cannot.

The complaints above are from a company that does not provide the same type of monitoring as Peak Alarm does. The systems purchased above were bought and the customers had to install the systems themselves. Peak Alarm has live operators that will talk to you 24 hours a day. We also have Guards that can respond in Salt Lake City for a very reasonable price and no other security company in Salt Lake has their own guard/patrol service, AV division, alarm division and a UL listed Central Station all in one company.

The Salt Lake City Police will not respond to security alarms unless they are PANIC alarms in which case they will respond hence if you go with Peak Alarm for only $10 per month we will add Alarm response in certain areas of Salt Lake City so we will send a guard out. We include 4 alarm responses per year and additional responses will be $50 per response. So with 4 included that comes to $120 per year or $30 per response which is a very fair price for sending out a licensed security patrol guard.

Call Larry Love 801 428 1384 for more information about alarm systems with a no cost quote and I can email you additional information to help you with your comparisons. If there is anything posted on this site that is found to be offensive or in violation of any copy write law please notify Larry Love and it will immediately be taken of the web site. These complaints do not list which company is being refereed to and are real complaints and our suggestion is that you research all companies ahead of time before you purchase so your experience will be an informed one and a better experience than these customers had.

Recent Peak Alarm ongoing training

Brands of Fire Alarm

Depending on the brand of fire alarm you have installed in your facility the cost of parts and service will vary. When you choose a proprietary many times you may end up paying higher costs.

Peak Alarm offers ongoing training programs to their 300 plus employees at four offices in Idaho and in Utah. This week the sales teams were trained on what flexibility is available to us regarding contracts, the different options and customization that our Central Station can offer to the customers and we were trained on our new initiative WHITE GLOVE TREATMENT OF CUSTOMERS AND EACH OTHER.

Call Larry Love (801) 428 1384 for more information. ESPANOL Y ENGLISH

Peak Alarm continues to train all their departments and the new WHITE GLOVE initiative is to help step up our customer service and also treat each other with more respect. Peak also puts all their employees through FBI background checks and even local police department checks.

Some of the other important points of the training were as follows:

All 22 of those in the training answered various questions and had to get answers from others in the group to complete the surveys.

1. What do you dislike most in a sales rep? Being Pushy, High Pressure, Late and Dishonest were the top four answers.

2. When a salesperson is talking to you, what interactions make you feel uncomfortable? Lack of knowledge, talking too much without listening

3. How do you as the customer define value? Bang for your buck. Not everyone will buy the most expensive product and most won’t buy the least expensive product but customers want quality and a fair price. Many are willing to go with a solid company like Peak Alarm even if the prices are a bit higher because Peak offers a whole package of same day or next day service, UL Listed Central Station, Guard and Patrol Service and top notch sales teams that are knowledgeable.

We discussed some of the tried and true principles of sales such as A.Preliminaries (Hello etc…) B. Investigating stage – What do they want, what do they need and what is their budget? C. Demonstrating – What is the capability of the products that Peak Alarm offers and D. Obtaining Commitment in the form of a signed proposal or agreement.

We learned about the research done between larger dollar sales and smaller items and how high pressure sales techniques actually hurt your possibility of getting a commitment when dealing in larger dollar amounts. The smaller purchases that can be related to impulse buying don’t cause as much buyer remorse. Getting a bad deal on a larger product such as a car can affect more people than the customer. Often other security companies hire very young people and teach them these high pressure sales techniques so they can go out and get quick sales. These are the same companies that are being sued in several states and that have thousands of complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau.

Peak Alarm is proud that we have only had one complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau in the last 3 years as of 9/22/16 and zero complaints in the last two years.

We had a session on contracts and learned quite a bit about the ins and outs of these agreements and why we need them to protect the company and the customer.

We made long lists of items that we can improve on and among the list of items we determined that some of the most important things we all should be working on are: Being Honest at all times, Showing up early to each appointment and if we cannot then making sure we call ahead of time to let our customer know what happened and when we will arrive. Another skill that we all need to work on is COMMUNICATION. One of the most important parts of this skill is LISTENING so we learned some techniques associated with listening, body language and personalities. Product knowledge is important although we have a large team of people that can help with that and learning what our customers need and getting them pricing in a professional timely manner will make all the difference in the world. We also went over the importance of sending out hand written thank you cards.

We had a training during our two day training sessions where the sales team actually programmed a DMP security system so we could learn what the techs go through and have a better understanding of how the technical side works. Hands on training We also had a class about customer service and the options our Central Station can offer the customer. Well that is short recap of this training and then we ended with several of our team members getting awards for their efforts.

Thank you to Peak Alarm management for feeling that ongoing training is important enough to spend this much time and effort on. Call Larry Love to get more information about Peak Alarm, Pricing or to set up a tour of Peak Alarm in Salt Lake City. (801) 428 1384
