I served the people of the State of Utah by service on the Alarm System Security and Licensing board for over 7 years. I was appointed by the Acting Governor Olene Walker. As chairman of this board I was also a member of the Construction trade commission which is a policy making board.

While serving on these boards I met many wonderful people such as Scott Sessions with Mountain Alarm, Will Naegle with Alarm control and Jeff Howe with Peak Alarm all of whom are honest and well known businessmen in our community. I can’t make a full list of all the people I dealt with but this is a short list of great companies that are all local companies.

Mountain Alarm is the largest of the three and within the family they also own a UL listed Central Station (Also known as Fire Protection Services – Central Station is Avantguard)

Alarm Control does incredible work and most of their work is commercial and they can solve hard to handle intrusion issues. (Also known as Armed Alert)

Peak Alarm is unique in the fact that they have an Alarm division, Guard and Patrol Division, AV Division and a UL listed Central Station

Having worked with these individuals for years you get to know them well, how they speak, how they act and most importantly what kind of people they are. With the state of Utah being full of alarm companies that send people out to other states to knock doors and most of those businesses are just looking for the quick residential systems that can be put in in a couple of hours or less. The list of the above three companies have great records with the Better Business Bureau unlike some of the other competitors that have several thousand complaints.

Take care when getting proposals from alarm companies to do your research first and remember you do get what you pay for and there is no free lunch. Some of these companies claim to provide free equipment or labor but don’t be deceived. If you sign a 36 month agreement with Peak ALarm for $45 dollars a month (A typical monitoring rate for interactive cellular) you would pay $1,620.00 over 36 months.

If you sign a 60 month agreement with another company at $45 per month you would pay $2,700 over 60 months or 5 years and they say it is free equipment but you are really paying for it and if you decide to change monitoring they will take you to court and force you to pay what they call BOC or Balance of Contract in order to get out of the contract.

The kicker is that these companies often will charge you $70 per month for 5 years or $4,200 which is over double what Peak charges. Granted each system is different and there are many factors such as whether the system is encrypted making is much less likely to hack and how many devices are on the system and the services that you have each month.

Typical Monitoring $35 per month (This can vary when you bundle other services)
Alarm Response where we sent a uniformed guard in a marked car to your home or business $10 per month (Only in specific areas)
Key Response where you have a keybox on your property so in the event of an alarm we would send a guard out to check the inside of the property $20 per month
Schedules, text or email notification, openings and closings (alert you if your store is opened too early or not armed on time or disarmed on time) Some other services
Cellular Monitoring $15 per month (Includes interactive arm and disarming)
Home automation services such as locks, lighting control, thermostat control, garage door control also are other such services that can be bundled
Commercial Fire monitoring is normally $35 for landline or $48 for high supervision cellular or radio

Years after I began on the Alarm System Security and Licensing Board for DOPL one of the companies that has lots of complaints with the BBB started sending a lawyer to each of our meetings to observe. I understand why they would do this. This company happens to be very large and has a great deal of accounts. This company had been accused of deceptive business practices and had been sued in several states and even recently was ordered to pay 10 million dollars to another alarm company. We were even told by the company owners that since they had thousands of salespeople it was very hard for them to control the actions of so many people. At Peak Alarm for example when a salesperson does something they should not do they are reprimanted and receive a written warning and if it happens again they can be let go. If any of the sales people do not qualify or pass the FBI background check they are let go and I know this is the same at Mountain as well as Alarm Control. One large company that had an employee not pass the back ground check simply transferred him to another state where the licensing laws will allow a person with a felony to sell or install security systems.

So there are honest alarm companies out there that you can use, you can get bids from them and worry less since you have done your research on the people the company and their business practices. All companies will have complaints on the internet. Looking at the www.bbb.org complaints is a bit better since they know both sides will be investigated. Many people hesitate to file a complaint with the bbb if they know they were in the wrong and if it is investigated the truth will come out. Two of the above listed companies have zero complaints on the BBB and one of them only has 5 compared to over 4000 with another Utah based company.

1. Make sure your security system cannot be defeated by someone cutting the phoneline outside the house or business. You can switch to a cellular or radio communicator to make this more secure.

1A. Make sure that you use an encrypted system such as DMP or Qolsys so hackers cannot defeat your system from out front of your home.

2. Make sure you clean your smoke detectors every 6 months or year so they will last longer

3. Make sure you test your system often to make sure nothing has been tampered with. Often someone within your organization will attempt to disable doors or other items.

4. Update your call list with current phone numbers and names and new passwords.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding 2G Sunset
1. Why are you shutting down your 2G network?
Mobile data traffic in the United States grew by 75,000 percent over a six-year span, from 2001-2006. In the six years that followed, mobile data traffic on AT&T’s national wireless network increased more than 50,000 percent (from January 2007 through December 2013). Reallocating capacity to our more advanced wireless networks will help more of our customers have a better experience.

2. The network turn down is not until 2017. Why are you sending me reminders now?
We believe it’s important for us to be transparent about our plans for the 2G network. Our spectrum reallocation efforts have already begun and will continue between now and January 1, 2017. We may turn down some markets entirely before 2017. We’re taking advantage of the long lead time to work proactively with customers who are using our 2G network today to manage their migration to the more advanced networks.

3. You say that you’ll work closely with customers to manage the migration process. How will customers be alerted of the transition and how will you ensure it’s a smooth process?
We’re committed to working closely with customers to make this process as easy as possible. In cases where we’re turning down AT&T’s owned and operated 2G network, we’ll continue to communicate specific details well in advance of turning down the network and work hard to ensure mobile communication needs are met throughout the process.

4. Why can’t AT&T allocate a small portion of its spectrum to accommodate subscribers who don’t want to transition?
Maintaining our 2G network to serve a small number of customers wouldn’t be an efficient use of our spectrum, which can be better used to support our 3G and 4G networks. By making this transition, M2M customers will be able to enhance their applications and solutions with new features (i.e. video cameras for real-time streaming/records for alarm solutions, driver dash cameras for fleet trucks, etc.) because of the higher speeds of the upgraded network, allowing them to better serve their customers and employees. This would not be possible on the 2G network.

5. Is this one way that you’re addressing the issue of limited spectrum?
We are happy with how our network is performing, but we are always looking to augment our spectrum position. In fact, we closed more than 60 spectrum deals in 2013 alone. Aside from the spectrum acquisitions, we’ve invested more than $140 billion of capital and spectrum acquisitions in our wireline and wireless networks in the last six years, and we plan to invest approximately $21 billion this year. We are getting better spectral efficiency with our LTE network, and we’re on track to begin the WCS build as planned in 2015.

6. So do you have plans to turn down your 3G network to put spectrum that’s currently used for 3G
to 4G service?
We currently have no plans to turn down our 3G network.

7. Will customers experience issues with the network during this transition?
We anticipate a smooth transition. It’s unlikely but possible that some 2G customers could see minor
temporary service issues while we’re completing this work. We’ll work hard to ensure they continue to
receive a good network experience.

8. For customers who do transition to a more advanced 3G/4G device, will their coverage be
comparable to what they have on the 2G network today?
We anticipate coverage will be comparable to the coverage they received from our 2G network. Our 3G
network has virtually nationwide coverage, and we have the nation’s largest 4G network, currently
covering nearly 280 million people. A 4G device will operate on the 3G network when customers are not
in areas with 4G coverage.

9. Is it true that your competitors will continue to offer service on their 2G network? Why is AT&T
shutting down its 2G network so early?
We can’t speak to our competitors’ plans. Adding spectrum and managing our existing spectrum for its
most efficient use provides customers with the best wireless experience. This is a top priority for AT&T.

10. How will AT&T help Connected Device and M2M customers adapt to a post-2G world?
AT&T is committed to providing clear, advance notice and communications about our 2G migration and
to working closely with our customers to manage the transition. Ultimately, customers are responsible
for planning hardware upgrades in a reasonable timeframe prior to planned network shut downs, but
AT&T has developed programs, such as our Mobile Broadband Accelerator program, to promote
adoption of newer 3G and 4G technologies.

11. Will AT&T continue to certify 2G modules and devices?
No. AT&T has discontinued certification of 2G hardware. In order to support key customers, AT&T
provides maintenance release code for EDO and MVNO devices ONLY when a specific need requires
updated code.

12. I’ve heard that not all devices using GSM are traditional devices, some are automated machines. How are these devices impacted?
In addition to traditional handsets, AT&T supports machine-to-machine (M2M) communications for a variety of connected devices, including those found in cars, power meters, shipping containers, wind turbines, vending machines and more. Some of these devices run on 2G/GSM (GPRS/EDGE) technology and will be impacted by our 2G network transition plan.

13. How does this affect my in-building solution?
Service for in-building solutions that are 2G based will be discontinued with this technology sunset.

14. Your competitors have made public statements that they intend to support their respective 2G technologies until at least 2020. Why isn’t AT&T?
As devices rapidly upgrade from 2G to newer technologies, carriers are shifting spectrum and other network resources to support this change, while also bringing new spectrum into service for 3G and 4G. AT&T, like all other companies, must make a business decision about how to allocate limited resources given the explosion of the mobile Internet.

15. When will AT&T mandate that our 2G resellers/M2M clients stop activating and/or re-activating 2G devices?
AT&T is working closely with M2M customers to ensure that 2G activations are discontinued as soon as possible.

16. Will AT&T help me with the development cost of my business’ migration?
Customers are responsible for planning hardware upgrades in a reasonable timeframe prior to planned network shut downs, but AT&T has developed initiatives, such as our Mobile Broadband Accelerator program, to promote adoption of newer 3G and 4G technologies.

17. How does this affect my company’s service agreement, will ETFs apply if I cancel service due to the 2G migration?
A new business mobility contract is not required, however if you upgrade your individual lines of service — now or at a later date — you may need to make a new line commitment term and may be subject to ETF per the conditions in your business mobility agreement.

18. How will enterprise customers headquartered in one market be notified about the sunset of their 2G subscribers in another market?
We’re committed to working closely with customers to make this process as easy as possible. In cases where we’re turning down AT&T’s owned and operated 2G network, we’ll communicate with specific details regarding impacted subscribers well in advance of turning down the network and work hard to ensure their mobile communications needs are met throughout the process.

Last night we went out on a cold night to get some errands done. While we were waiting for some soccer shirts to have numbers put on them at Factory 4 u. We went to the Pho Hoa Noodle Soup place on the corner of Redwood Road 1700 West and 3300 South. The steak hot soup came with herb leaves, lemon, fresh bean sprouts and jalapeños on the side to add if you wanted to add them. I got the bun and it came with barbequed pork and fried egg rolls sitting on top of a rice noodles and fresh vegetables. It felt healthy just looking at it and the taste was fabulous. I do need to mention that the service was really with a smile or I should say smiles. Everyone there seemed especially happy. On the menus it says “Health Conscious Choice” and after we finished we really did feel great. The address is 3460 South Redwood Road in West Valley City 84119.
